Intergration of Technology into Nursing

Rebirth of healthcare in the 21st century is the integration of innovative technology solutions into health care practice.

Transparency between nurse and patient
Nursing technology has converted the way nurses work and continues to evolve providing quick access to experts in a remote area.  According to research, technology in the nursing arena has improved patient overall outcomes, decreased clinical errors and reduced the amount of paperwork that nurses were obligated to perform.

Future Nursing

As the point-of-care continues to advance it will include software application on wireless device that will allow nurses to gain information at their fingertips.  There are many emerging technologies that will change the practice of nursing in the future.

Career Advancement

Nurses are the largest health care profession in the United States. For existing nurses to achieve their full career potential, there are numerous reasons they need to embrace informatics into practice.  The most necessary reasons for nurses to focus on informatics is the implementation of the national system of electronic health records.
This electronic health record system will make it vital for all nurses to have a basic familiarity with computer systems.  At the least, nurses need to have proficiency in documenting in a patient's electronic health record and observe appropriate privacy precautions.  Informatics has become the advance life support for nurses to carry out their day-to-day duties of administration and patient care.

  3. Kanika,

The evolving technology in the healthcare system would greatly affect career advancement; however, there should leadership and administration support in order for these technology to take place in the setting. Leaders/ Administrators should understand, plan, embrace, manage, and support the integration of the new technology in addition to providing the tools and resources for the staff such as education and training to successfully utilize the integrated technology. There must be a shared vision among leaders and staff in order to collaborate and provide a sense of engagement to empower the staff use of technology.

    Great post Kanika :)

  4. I agree with you that there are many emerging technologies that will change the practice of nursing in the future, Many studies proved that some technologies already changed the practice of nursing. In the article of (Bassendowski, S et al., 2011) that addressed the theme of innovation in health care and also described a partnership with All Nations’ Healing Hospital, MITACS ACCELERATE, and the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan focused on integration of technology in a health care environment, the findings showed perceived improvements in quality of work life, patient care, and utilization of evidence in practice. Nurses indicated that they experienced improved communication, greater visibility at the senior management level, and enhanced interprofessional contributions.
The nurses also indicated positive changes in terms of enough time to document care, confidence, and competence, desire to go to work, and a respectful workplace. Nurse leaders leadership indicated increased participation in selection of technologies, in the policy process, and in evaluating change.
